What is the difference between landscape lighting and Christmas lighting?
Landscape lighting is a permanent low-voltage system on buried wire that runs every night of the year. Christmas lighting goes up for the season on the rooflines, trees and columns, then comes down in January and is stored until next year.
Which lighting project should I start with?
With no lighting yet, a lit front walk is the smallest useful project and can grow into a full design. With an old system that has dark spots, start with a repair and an LED upgrade. For the holidays, the rooflines and the front trees carry most of a display.
Can I install landscape lighting myself?
You can, and big-box kits are made for it. The difference in a professional system is in the parts you never see: wire buried rather than laid on the mulch, a transformer sized to the run, solid fixtures rather than plastic stakes, and every light aimed at night.
How do I choose what to light in my yard?
Start with what you look at or walk past after dark: the front of the house, the entry, one or two trees worth showing, the path to the door, and the patio or deck. A few things lit well look better than everything lit a little.
