Answers
The questions we hear before the first fixture goes in, answered plainly.
A transformer takes household current from an outdoor outlet and steps it down to low voltage, which runs through wire buried in the beds and lawn to each fixture. Sizing that transformer to the number of fixtures and the length of the run is what keeps the far end of the yard as bright as the near end.
For most homes, yes, for three reasons: steps and walks you can see at night, a front that looks finished from the street after dark, and a running cost that LED keeps small. Whether it is worth it for your house depends on what there is to light, and the walk around the property at dusk settles that.
The LED lamps last many years, far longer than halogen bulbs, which is why an LED system needs so little upkeep. What usually gives out first on any system is a buried connection or an undersized transformer, so the wiring and the transformer matter as much as the lamps.
